Shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari declared his intention to seek a second term in office, sharp disagreements among Nigerians ensued and caused stir on social media.
Buhari ended weeks of suspense when he announced his decision to recontest the presidential seat in 2019 at the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Immediately his decision was made public, Nigerians took to Twitter to express their views. While some rejoiced at the President’s decision, those who seemed unimpressed with Buhari’s performance in office, kicked, vowing to send he (Buhari) back to Daura, his hometown.
Buhari made history in 2015 when he defeated then incumbent President, Goodluck Jonathan and ended the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) 16-year rule in the country.
But unlike in 2015, the reactions that trailed Buhari declaration fell short of supports and appeared that the president popularity among Nigerians may have slump.
In his own reaction, a staunch supporter of Buhari with handle, @Ayekooto expressed his delight and promised to mobilise his family to vote the president again.
He simply said, “ME and MY FAMILY will vote for you AGAIN in 2019!”.
Another supporter of the president, Abiodun Lanrryb on the handle @Lanrryb90 doubted that there could be no candidate who will match Buhari in the poll, predicting an easy victory for him more than 10 months to the poll.
“Then ask but before you proceed, PMB is the best candidate and currently the best president we have. Is their someone better than him? Who is the person?” he queried.
But for Ichie Edozie Okeke, another twitter user on the handle @edozie01, he considered the decision of Buhari to seek re-election as an opportunity to retire him in Daura, his hometown.
“Thank God for giving us opportunity to retire Buhari through the ballot box come 2019!” Edozie tweeted.
Towing the line of Edozie, a twitter user @SledgeEmcee is convinced that Nigerians would not re-elect Buhari, noting that he (Buhari) will be disgraced at the poll
“Tolu Ogunlesi, tell MUHAMMADU that he will be disgraced and sent back to DAURA because he is so INCOMPETENT that, the dictionary meaning of INCOMPETENCE is protesting and demanding for additional meaning to itself to accommodate Buhari’s brand of INCOMPETENCY,” his tweet reads.
In another reaction, a twitter user who seemed not favourable to Buhari’s re-election, Prince ‘Yemi Adebowale but appeared skeptical on the chances of stopping Buhari returning to office wrote: “Now that Buhari has declared to run in 2019. Who will break Nigerians from the chain of the tyrant?”
But as the debate continues, it is yet unknown which opposition candidate will square Buhari in the poll. Though, erstwhile ruling party, PDP, had conceded its presidential candidate to North but it remained unknown who among the array of aspirants will fly the party’s flag.
