APC crisis: Okorocha’s supporters demand new date for ward, local congresses

Members of All Progressives Congress (APC) loyal to governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha have demanded immediate announcement of new date for the botched ward and local congresses.

The aggrieved party members, who stormed the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja argued that no congress held in Imo state, urging Oyegun-led National Working Committee to quickly take a drastic step in arresting the barbaric situation rocking the party in the state.

A delegation of party stakeholders from the state had earlier vowed to resist Okorocha’s antics during ward congresses held on May 5.

They stated this position after a meeting with the Chief John-Oyegun-led National Working Committee at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, May 2.

The leader of the delegation, Chief Okey Ikoro, who addressed journalists after the meeting, said, “We the stakeholders of the APC dissociate ourselves and the Imo State chapter of the APC from the ignoble policies and programmes of the Owelle Rochas Okorocha-led administration which are viewed as anti-people, unpopular and retrogressive.”

But reacting to the governor’s loss during ward congresses, the leader of the group (Pro-Okorocha) and Speaker of Imo state of house Assembly, Hon. Acho Ihim said members of the party in Imo state still stand by the governor, despite negative comments against the governor.

“We are here to reconfirm the fact that there was no election held in all the general certain wards in Imo state. There was no congress in Imo state and we are here to reaffirm, to send and demand that an announcement be made for a new date for the ward congresses, Local congresses and we can now talk about the state congresses.

“We have affirmed our stand with our governor, we are still standing with our governor. He is the face of the APC in the South East. Of course the young man has done so well that without him, there would have been no APC in the South East in the first place. Imo state in particular is the fulcrum of APC and it cannot be toyed with.

“The shenanigans that we saw can never be taken for congresses. We are taking this very seriously, and that is why honourable members of APC extractions combined with the house of representatives are here to affirm same, that there was no congress and we never take to have been held and we here are saying that we support his excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, and we stand by him at all times and I can assure you that if they take four honourable members of house of Assembly, which is the main stand of any party,” he said.

Reacting to journalists’ enquiry about endorsement of son’s-in-law, Ihim stressed that the governor has his preferences, arguing that anybody can also endorse whoever he or she wants provided the ticket will be contested during primaries.
