Drama in Ekiti assembly as lawmaker suspended for dumping PDP

Ekiti state House of Assembly on Wednesday suspended a lawmaker, Hon. Sunday Akinniyi, from the hollowed chamber following his decision to dump ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The suspension was conveyed in a statement signed by the Chairman of the House on Information, Hon. Samuel Omotosho.

Though, Omotosho hinged the decision of the House to petitions against Akinniyi, who is representing Ikere II constituency, perceptions are rife that the lawmaker was suspended for defecting from the PDP.

The House Spokesman said, “The suspension follows series of allegations levelled against him by the Leader of Business after due diligence investigation carried out by Hon Ayodele Fajemilehin-led committee of the  Ekiti State House of Assembly.”

He added that the suspended lawmaker breeds terrorism and “violence towards the Mace in a properly constituted plenary session.”

Justifying Akinniyi’s suspension, Omotosho, who detailed other alleged misconduct against the suspended lawmaker pointed out that he (Akinniyi) is a latecomer and truant, noting that efforts to correct him did not yield.

Before this latest action against him, Akinniyi was removed as the Chief Whip of the House – a development Omotosho said was as a result of his misconduct which now warranted his suspension.

“Hon Akinniyi Sunday was initially removed as the Chief Whip of the House on the 24th of May 2018 when his malfeasance was becoming unbearable, in an attempt to wake him up from slumber and alive to his responsibilities to his people,” Omotosho noted.

Continuing, he said “Rather than achieve this, the few occasions he presented himself for official duties in the House, Hon Akinniyi is in the habbits of sleeping from the begining of any program to the end to the extent that he was Nicknamed ‘the sleeping Honourable’.

“Several attempts by the Hon Speaker advising him to pay attention to his people and his health has been rebuffed with insults.

“It is in reference to all these that this House viewed the failures of Hon Akinniyi as incompatible with the spirit of good governance and quality representation of the present House of Assembly and he is hereby suspended indefinitely.”

While the duration of his suspension was not disclosed, Omotosho said Akinniyi will not be allowed within the vicinity of the Assembly during the period of his suspension and that should he attempt to jump his suspension, the Clerk has been mandated to lodge a formal complaint of threat to lives of Honourable Members against him to the Security agencies.
