Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole and the Police have on Sunday killed a female suicide bomber that attempted to sneak into University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to cause havoc to lives and property in Borno state.
The foiled suicide bombings occurred at about 9:45pm on Sunday night in Maiduguri at the eastern flank of the institution.
According to residents and students, the information about the sneaking in of the suspect, was promptly relayed to troops at the Gate 3 by members of Civilian JTF.
The Borno State Police Command in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday disclosed that two suicide bombers a male and female were shot dead by a joint patrol of the Police and Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel at the eastern flank of varsity.
Edet Okon, the Police Public Relations Officer’s statement reads, “At about 8.45pm yesterday, two suicide bombers, a male and female, in an attempt to infiltrate University of Maiduguri through the Eastern end of the campus, they were sighted and promptly shot by F/Nos 378110 Sgt Obiora Elias, 411295 Sgt Umoh Onosai & 449193 Sgt Danjuma Soda of 51PMF Oghara on special duty mine & a NAF personnel,16/29333 AM Monday B. on joint patrol.
“Resulting explosions killed both bombers only. Scene/vicinity sanitized by personnel of EOD. Normalcy restored”.
UNIMAID authority stated further that Boko Haram members had been making several attempts between 2016 and last year to gain entry into the varsity, after killing one of its Professors and two other varsity staff members in January, 2016.
“The alertness of troops and other security agencies on guard, also prevented the terrorists from getting entry to wreak havoc,” said a senior varsity security guard.
