Ahead of the team’s opening game in Russia on Saturday, Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, has assured Nigerians of strong performance against Croatia in the group D opening clash.
Rohr, while speaking with the media at a press conference at Essentuki, the base of the Super Eagles, observed that though the opposing side have more better players than the Nigeria’s team but said his team would not watch them (Croatia) roll over it in the encounter.
He admitted that his team are young and inexperienced compared to their Croatian counterparts, however, asked Nigerians to keep faith in the players for better results on Saturday.
He said “We admire this team, but we do not plan to watch them when we play against them, we hope to fight. They are all wonderful players…playing in biggest teams in Europe…On paper with their names, Croatia are much better than us.”
When asked on probably players to feature for the game, Rohr refused to make the disclosure, saying he is keeping his team list close to his chest until the last minute.
“I will wait till the last minute to announce the team to start the game,” he responded, adding that “I wish to see who is really fit.”
On the level of fitness of the players, Rohr indicated his satisfaction on the training session held in its camp in Austria, declaring the players’ physically ready for the tournament.
“The team are ready physically after we worked well and showed commitment in Austria,” he said but suggested that “We have another three days to be ready tactically.”
The Eagles are expected to train this morning before flying out to Kaliningrad venue of their World Cup opener today. The flight is estimated to last two and half hours.
The team will return to Essentuki immediately after the match in Kaliningrad.
