No more siege in Osun PDP, says new chair
The newly sworn-in chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun state, Hon. Soji Adagunodo said that the siege of turbulence that has plagued the party for over two years has come to an end, adding that the party will provide the needed rallying point to easeout the All Progressives Congress (APC) from hold of the state.
Adagunodo made this pronouncement in his acceptance speech shortly after he was announced the winner of the congress held at the Osogbo Township Stadium, the state capital, on Sunday, saying the doors of the party is wide open for people to join.
Crisis broke in the party when some leaders refused to accept the April 2016 Congress – an outcome that factionalised the party in the state. While a faction led by a former Deputy Governor, Iyiola Omisore insisted on a former commissioner, Bayo Faforiji, the opposing faction backed a former state lawmaker, Soji Adagundo, to lead the party in the state.
But a recent move by PDP National Working Committee (PDP) to restore peace, thrown up the decision for Congress, which saw Adagunodo elected as the chairman of the party in Osun state.
Applauding the party hierarchy for the success of the process that led to his emergence, Adagundo flanked by other members of his State Working Committees (SWC), extended a hand of friendship to “our fellow contestants who also offered themselves for the service of our party in various positions at the Ward, Local and State levels of the PDP.”
Adagunodo, who acknowledged their doggedness and spirit of sportsmanships throughout the contest, said their loss was not a rejection by members but an indication that they are required in other tasks, other than administration of the party.
“I therefore wish to assure all our party leaders and teeming members that in line with the oath of office which I just swore to, we will always uphold the principles of fairness, truth, justice and equity in all decisions that we will be taking at all organs of the party in this state,” he pledged.
“We shall ensure that no member of the party suffers any form of discrimination on the basis of his or her previous affiliation during our crisis period.
“We shall, in word and in deed show that truly, there are no victors and there are no vanquished,” he stressed.
Intimating members on his plans as the chairman of PDP in Osun state, Adagunodo disclosed that his priority along other members of the SWC is to mobilise all members towards winning the upcoming governorship election.
He stressed the resolve of the party in the state under his leadership to seize power from the APC, who he said have brought great sorrow to many families in Osun state.
“The immediate goal of the State Working Committee is to ensure total mobilization of all party members for the most important goal ahead of us as a Party,” he disclosed.
“For the avoidance of any doubt, that goal is to democratically chase out the current band of corrupt, inept, sadistic and opportunistic government which has brought great sorrow to many families in our dear State.
“The PDP will by the grace of God provide the much needed rallying point for teachers, civil servants, doctors, farmers, students, pensioners, and all the great people of Osun state who have been impoverished by the Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola administration in the last 7 and half years.”
Justifying the power push by PDP in Osun state, Adagunodo accused Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola worsening the economy and well-being of the people in the state compared to what it inherited from the party in 2010, saying the government have failed from every index on governance.
“It is highly unimaginable that a governor who inherited an economically viable and socially stable state from the PDP in November 2010 has turned the state into the most heavily indebted state in Nigeria and one with the lowest sustainability index by 2018.
“How on earth will Osun state consistently come last in the performance chart of Senior Secondary Schools Examination in Nigeria?
“This is not the Osun state envisioned by our Founding fathers but we are not surprised because these are a band of invaders who lack any understanding of the dreams and vision of the great patriots who struggled for the creation of Osun state.
“We are determined therefore to rescue our state and restore light in place of darkness, hope in place of despair, joy in place of sorrow and prosperity in place of poverty.
“It is in this light that we today declare the commencement of OPERATION RESTORE THE GLORY,” the PDP chief declared.
