Osun PDP: Factional chairman reacts to lingering crisis
A new twist has been added to the lingering crisis rocking the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Osun state chapter, as a factional leader of the party, Hon. Soji Adagunodo, accused some people of ungodly desperation to pitch leaders of the party against each other.
The party had been battling with internal wrangling over the leadership of the party since 2016, which factionalised the party in the state into two camps.
While a camp favoured a former lawmaker, Soji Adagunodo as the chairman of the party in the state, the other camp led by the party’s governorship candidate in 2014, Iyiola Omisore, were backing a former commissioner in the state, Bayo Faforiji, for the party’s number one seat in the state.
However, the crisis took a new dimension on Wednesday, when a piece suspected to have emanated from the Faforiji camp, accused Adeleke family of manipulating the party’s hierarchy to produce Adagunodo as the chairman of the party in the state and paved way for the senator representing Osun West district, Ademola Adeleke, to pick the party’s governorship ticket.
The piece, which threw party members into confusion partly read, “In spite of countless anti-party activities involved in the Soji Adagunodo’s camp of PDP and Fatai Diekola-led APC group, their secret alliance is to field Sen. Ademola Adeleke and Hon. Sunday Akere as governorship candidate and running mate respectively.
“It is no news in the circle of the public that the Ede-born billionaire, Dr. Deji Adeleke allegedly bribed PDP’s National Working Committee to conduct fresh Ward Congress to eventually produce Hon. Adagunodo as Osun PDP Chairman.”
But dismissing the claim as a sinister plot to cause disaffection among leaders of the party, Adagunodo in a statement on Thursday said no aspirant of the party is attempting to hijack the governorship ticket.
Adagunodo who restated his commitment to fairness among every member of the party, assured that the bearer of the party’s ticket in the upcoming governorship election in the state will be credible and acceptable to every members and not as insinuated.
He said, “For avoidance of doubt, Osun State PDP under the leadership of Hon Soji Adagunodo by the grace of God almighty and support of our members, is poised as usual, to be fair to all aspirants under the banner of PDP in arriving at a credible and acceptable flag bearer from all our equally qualified aspirants for the September 22nd governorship election in Osun State.
“Any aspirant of whatever name and location in the State, by history and convention of the PDP, is free and even encouraged to aspire to any political office of his choice without any form of intimidation by anyone or from any quarter.”
He maintained he has resolved to be fair and seek guidance of God to arrive at the acceptable candidate that would not only deliver victory for PDP but matched the expectations of the people of the state, who are desirous of good governance away from the ‘misgovernance’ of the current APC-led government.
