RTEAN boss commits suicide over debt burden
Residents of Oke-Ibukun area in Ondo city were thrown into confusion over the weekend after the body of a commercial driver, Ayokunle, was found lifeless in his room.
Ayokunle, an executive member of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), was said to have taken his life due to pressures on a debt he owed a cooperative society.
The father of four, it was learnt, passed away after consuming some chemical substance with a cup of water the night before his body was found.
However, no suicide note was found in the room where his corpse was found.
His corpse was said to have been discovered by the officials of the RTEAN in Ekimogun area who came to pay him a visit in his house and noticed that the deceased had poisoned himself.
The deceased, it was gathered, obtained a short term loan some years back from a cooperative society in Ondo community.
He was said to have promised to pay back the loan at the appropriate time but failed to meet up and that generated heated argument between him and his creditors.
But pressures from his creditors, such as threats and provocative words from officials of the cooperative society, may have pushed him to consider suicide.
It was learnt that the family of the deceased has started preparation to bury the deceased as residents of the area have besieged his house to condole the wife, Kemi.
When contacted for comment, Ondo Police Command spokesman, Femi Joseph, said the incident is yet to be brought to the command attention.
