Rumpus in Federal Ministry, as workers demand Perm. Sec.’s sack
Civil servants of Federal Ministry of Science and technology on Monday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Aminat Shamaki.
The aggrieved workers, who took their protests to the minister, Ogbonnaya Onu in his office at the ministry’s headquarters, accused her of ‘high handedness and incompetency’, demanding her immediate removal.
It would be recalled that Shamaki had in 2015 been redeployed by President Muhammadu Buhari from Ministry of Niger Delta following the same scenario at the ministry.
Our correspondent, who visited the ministry at about 3:25pm observed that normalcy had returned to the ministry, following intervention of the minister.
But a top official and one of the protesters, who pleaded anonymity, told SAHEL STANDARD that the Permanent Secretary is fond of intimidating other civil servants working under her.
He added that she had once invited Mobile Policemen to deal with some workers who protested against her ‘high handedness and incompetency.’
“Last time we held the same kind of protests, there were gunshots from mobile policemen she invited to arrest us, which forced the protesters to scamper for safety.
“This time, we will not succumb to pressure, the woman must leave this ministry,” the official said.
Reacting to the development, Chief Press Secretary to the minister, Mr Aminu Ganiyu told our correspondent on telephone that the minister has promised to find a lasting solution to the problem.
“We have held an in-house meeting immediately after the protest, the minister has promised to resolve the problem, so, there is no cause for alarm,” he said.
Efforts to get the Permanent Secretary’s reaction proved abortive, as workers at her office didn’t allow our correspondent to enter.
