Federal Government’s refusal to adhere to the rule of law by obeying court directives ordering the release of Shiite leader, Ibrahim Elzazaaky, has been cited as the real reason behind Police, Shiite clash in Abuja, yesterday.
To this end, national chairman of the Action Peoples Party, APP, Barr. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, stated that it was sad the way and manner the Police clearly obstructed what was a peaceful and constitutional right of Shiite members as the Federal Government, having denied them justice, left the group with no other choice than to embark on the peaceful protest.
In a press release made available in Abuja by the the party chairman, Barr. Ugochinyere who also doubles as a youth activist say he and the entire members of his party across the country were ready to join in solidarity with the Shiite members, to protest what he termed the brazen disregard for the rule of law by the Buhari administration, stressing that the monster the act depicts must be tamed.
“The attack by the Nigeria Police is a deliberately orchestrated strategy to cow dissenting voices in the country. This is being done with a view to further weakening Nigerians’ right of protest as spelt out by the constitution and the Supreme Court.
“We view this as a mark of impunity and crass abuse of power that the right of protest by the Shiite group is today conjectured by the Federal Government to become the proviso for killing and maiming of the citizenry which voted it into power.
“We are particularly disturbed that if not checked, the APC led government of Muhammadu Buhari administration will use the same strategy to attempt to cow opposition parties and their members ahead the 2019 general election.
“Hence, our party – APP’s decision to join members of the Shiite group in protesting the unlawful and criminal detention of Sheik Zakzaaky”, the party said in the press release.
While calling on other Nigerians not to be cowed by the antics of the APC government , Barr. Ugochinyere said it was unfortunate that a party which ought to concentrate in redeeming it’s bruised image as a result of it woeful performance in office, will still resort to intimidation, coercion, deaths and brutalization of the Nigerian citizenry.
“No amount of brutalization of the Nigerian psyche will succeed especially as we enter the crucial stages of the 2019 electioneering year. Rules and laws can be an ass, but it’s subsisting nature is what make institutions across the globe heavily strong and reliable for economic and socio-cultural growth”, the APP chairman stated.
